The south of the island takes about half an hour to reach by road from the capital Roseau.   This area is probably best known for its unique and varied diving and snorkelling opportunities. The waters of the Caribbean Sea to the west are generally calm and clear, protected by the island's mountainous terrain from the prevailing easterly winds. Soufriere/ Scotts Head Bay Marine National Park is a submerged volcano, with drop-offs, wrecks, a wide variety of colourful fish and an abundance of coral in pristine condition. 'Champagne' - streams of tiny bubbles rising from the ocean floor - betray hot springs beneath the sea bed. Nature Island Dive is conveniently located on the coast road at Soufriere. At the 'toe' of the island, a trail leads past old cannons to the summit of a rocky outcrop. To the south, from any vantage point, the French island of Martinique may be clearly seen accross the channel. The road inland from Soufriere takes you to an open air warm sulphur springs bathing pool below the forest canopy, from where a nature trail leads to conical sulphur deposits on the hillside.
