Where
to stay in Dominica
the
EAST COAST
|
|
|
| Dominica's east coast receives prevailing winds off the
Atlantic Ocean. Much of the coastline is rugged and the roads twist and
climb over many ridges and cliffs between frequent river valleys. Picturesque
coves nestle between jagged headlands and there are the occasional stretches
of shallow beach where the surf rolls in over fine, dark, volcanic sand
and where turtles often come ashore at night to lay their eggs. Abundant
rainfall nurtures lush vegetation - ferns, heliconia, climbing cheese plants
etc., along with our plantations of coconuts, bananas and other tropical
produce. From the Pagua River, the road weaves south through the Carib
Territory, where fruit, freshly squeezed juices and local handicrafts such
as basket weaving and carvings may be purchased from small roadside kiosks.
Beyond Castle Bruce, the coast road ends at Petit Soufriere. To continue
south, one must head inland from Castle Bruce, to bear left at the first
junction after passing the Emerald Pool Visitor Centre, rejoining the coast
at the Rosalie River mouth. The scenery along this southerly stretch is
particularly striking, as the many forest clad mountains within the Morne
Trois Pitons National Park tower steeply above, their peaks often shrouded
by cloud. Hiking trails to two of our most beautiful waterfalls are accessed
from this side - the Sari Sari Falls is about an hour each way from above
La Plaine, and the Victoria Falls on the White River (flowing south east
from the Boiling Lake) may be reached from Delices. |

3 RIVERS RESORT
Whilst 3 Rivers Eco Lodge is described
on our Interior page, it is also
worth a mention here, as it is in close proximity to the south east coast
road - Rosalie Bay to Delices. Situated at the confluence of the Stuarts,
Cocoa and Rosalie Rivers, not far from the eastern boundary of the Morne
Trois Pitons National Park, this tranquil spot is a great place to
relax in a hammock, bathe in river pools, eat organically home grown produce
and enjoy nature's birds, butterflies and lush vegetation, whilst just
a short drive from the Atlantic Ocean with turtle beaches at Rosalie Bay,
Riviere Cyrique and Laplaine. Campers are also welcome.
There are some interesting local trails;
From the nearby village of Grand Fond is a trail which climbs up to the
Freshwater Lake at 2,500ft, located in the Morne Trois Pitons National
Park, another which descends to a scenic waterfall on the O'hara River,
and a lengthy hike up the Cocoa River leads to a series of small waterfalls.
