| The mid to north west
coast of Dominica is the warmest
and driest stretch, falling in what is termed a 'rainshadow' area. The
waters of the Caribbean Sea are generally calm and clear, protected by
the island's mountainous terrain from the prevailing easterly winds.
The
coastal road linking Roseau to Portsmouth is Dominica's busiest, on
which
cheap local minibus taxis pass frequently. Although only the waters
around
and to the north of the Cabrits peninsular are a designated marine
reserve,
a third reserve will soon be declared further south. Diving and
snorkelling is good along this entire stretch of coastline
and
is well catered for by dive shops at several locations. The twin hills
of the Cabrits peninsular are a National Park, with a Welcome Centre,
several
nature trails and the historic Fort Shirley, which is currently being
refurbished. To the south of Portsmouth
flows the tranquil Indian River, accessed by rowing boat only. Just
north
of Dublanc village is a road up to the Morne Diablotin National Park
which
has a trail to the summit of our highest mountain, 4,747ft. and another
gentle trail through Syndicate Forest, popular for parrot spotting. The
Coulibistrie and Macoucherie
valleys are also picturesque. |

stay for those visiting family in attendance there. Just a 5 minute
drive north is a pleasant beach at Toucari Bay. South is the Cabrits
National Park, Purple Turtle Beach, Portsmouth, the Indian River,
Picard Beach, a dive centre, Syndicate Forest and trail up Morne

BRANDY MANOR

Brief Description:
A country guesthouse on 1.7 acres in a quiet area of mixed agriculture
and tropical rainforest, bordering the picturesque Brandy River with
some slow pools suitable for bathing. A two storey house and cottage
are both constructed of local timber and stone. The
English owner, Yasmin, resides there and has 3 guestrooms available for
visitors. There is just one large shared bathroom. Yasmin is an
accomplished horse rider and former star of the British Equestrian
Team, whilst her partner, Linton, is a national champion jockey from
St. Lucia. They have stables with 5 horses on which
you may be taken on guided tours of the rainforest and surrounding
countryside. They also have a small dog kennel facility. At the side of
the house is a bar and shaded seating area with bench style tables.
This is country living - no TV, internet or other distractions. From
here there is a 45 minute hike upstream to the 300ft Brandy Falls, on
which you may be taken on a guided tour. Meals by request. Vehicle
parking.
Parrots often sighted in the garden. Approx. 35
minutes by road from
Melville Hall Airport, 10 minutes from Portsmouth and 75 minutes to the
capital Roseau.
Other natural attractions in the vicinity include: to the west Picard
Beach, Cabrits National Park and Marine Reserve, restoration of Fort
Shirley, Indian River boat tour, south west Syndicate
Forest and the Morne Diablotin trail, to the north Cold
Soufriere and to the east the scenic
Atlantic coast. Jeep hire recommended at this location.

combined bath/ shower. External stairs lead down to the garden. On the
remainder of the covered area at apartment level is
a small tiled counter with sink and some garden furniture, where
you can relax outdoors and enjoy the west coast sunsets. Keeps
open the Salisbury option during periods when the villa is
already booked. Renting both the villa and apartment affords the
opportunity to accommodate a party of up to a maximum of 10 persons.

Location: near the mouth of the Layou River, Hillsborough, mid west coast
Brief
Description:
Petini Layou is a newly completed (2011) guest cottage situated in a
forest clearing on a large private estate near the estuary of
Dominica's longest river. The Layou River valley is an area of
outstanding natural beauty along which, at weekends and public
holidays, both locals and visitors like to picnic and swim. The
building comprises a small apartment at the front which will have a
long term tenant. The remainder is a spacious open plan self contained
cottage used by the owner when visiting Dominica, otherwise available
from 1st September 2011 via
Nature Island Destinations for short term visitor accommodation.
Attractive finishes include tiled floors throughout and wooden clad
columns and beams. The owner's musical and artistic flair is apparent
in the choice of fixtures and fittings. Indonesian style arched
openings surround the western exterior, fitted with outward opening
wooden doors, the central pair of which open onto an outdoor patio with
loungers. Though the sleeping area is part of the open plan design, a
folding screen may be placed around it if desired. There is also a
futon - a settee which may be opened out into a second double bed if
required. Sleeping area has opening windows with insect screens and
security bars. The bathroom has a hot water shower and there is a
washing
machine in the kitchen. There is no TV, but there is a selection
of dvd's to watch on your laptop pc along with WiFi internet. Telephone
is available for
receiving calls only (cellphones may
also be
hired
with most vehicle rentals). In the event of utility problems there is a
stand-by generator and rainwater storage tank. The access road is
unsurfaced and requires
a 4 wheel drive vehicle (which we can arrange for you to collect at the
airport or ferry dock on arrival in Dominica). A quiet and secluded
setting where the only sounds you will hear are those of the birds,
frogs and crickets. No children under age 18. This venue is intended
for romantic
couples, writers, artists, musicians or business people seeking a break
from the hustle and bustle of our hectic lifestyles. Maid service twice
a week. Though there is a quarry in the vicinity, due to the flat elevated location of the cottage and forested surrounds, no noise from the quarry reaches the cottage. A good central location, convenient for exploring the entire
island - Melville Hall Airport 50 minutes, Roseau 20 minutes. Nearby
attractions include wacky Rollers treetops adventure park and river
tubing on the Layou River. The popular beach at Mero Village is just a
5 minute drive north and 5 minutes beyond that is Salisbury Beach where scuba diving
can
be arranged with the East Carib Dive Club.
The east coast can be reached via the Layou Valley road and Portsmouth
is a 40 minutes drive north, passing on the way the turn off to
Syndicate Forest on the western slopes of our highest mountain, Morne
Diablotin (4,774 ft.) and Picard Beach. Approaching Portsmouth is the
Indian River National Park and beyond Portsmouth
is the Cabrits peninsular - a National Park with nature trails and the
historic Fort Shirley - and surrounded by a Marine National Park.
