RAINFOREST COTTAGES
Location:
Fond Melle, approx. 1 mile east of the Emerald Pool and Visitor Centre
on the road from Pont Casse to Castle Bruce.
Brief Description:
Five spacious cottages in a cool, tranquil location. All cottages have
en-suite bathroom with hot water, self catering facilities, telephone,
radio and maid service. The owners residence can be seen in the
pictures, approx. 100 yards beyond the facility.
Approx. 20 minutes by road to the Carib Territory, 50 minutes
from Melville Hall Airport and 45 minutes to the capital, Roseau. No nearby
shops. Vehicle hire recommended.

Steakhouse Restaurant, opened in October 2004, was not a great success

At a cool 1,200ft. this 200 acre estate, bequeathed in 1990 to Clemson
University in the USA, is a Wildlife Sanctuary and the home of SCEPTRE
- Springfield Centre for Environmental Protection, Research and Education.
At it's core is the old plantation house, built over 150 years ago, which
has been extended and added to over the years in similar colonial style.
Guest rooms have en-suite bathroom, balcony, fan and telephone. Radio available
on request. Covered terrace restaurant, serving organically home grown
produce, specialises in creole cuisine and enjoys an excellent aspect over
a forested valley to the Caribbean Sea. Lounge. Bar. Conference facility
for up to 40 people. The estate has approx. 2 miles of footpaths and a
river with pools suitable for bathing. Attractive garden. Much of the estate
is forested. A theme of eco-friendly natural resource management - agroforestry,
organic farming and wildlife preservation. 20 minutes by road to Roseau,
(Canefield Airport 10 min, Melville Hall Airport 1 hour). No nearby community
- vehicle hire recommended.

It should be noted that this is non profit making facility. It provides
group training courses which seek to improve our knowledge of this wonderful

RAINBOW VILLAGE

Cochrane, a small village approx. 4 miles east of Canefield, on the forested
mountain slopes not far from the western extremity of the Morne Trois Pitons
National Park.
Brief Description:
Situated at a cool 1,400ft in an attractive and well tended garden are
five cottages constructed of natural stone and hardwood, one of which sleeps
4 persons, the other four sleep two persons. Each cottage has a combined
lounge/bedroom, bathroom and kitchen. The larger cottage has a separate
bedroom and is situated at the highest point, with a generous balcony overlooking
the garden, enjoying a sea view. Swimming pool and covered bar. No restaurant,
though local dishes may be prepared to order at the bar. Partly lawned
garden with stone pathways is predominated by red flowering ginger
lilies and heliconia. Nature trail into the Morne Trois Pitons National
Park forest, past the Stinking Hole, to our highest waterfall, Middleham
Falls (300ft.) continuing on to the village of Laudat (2,000ft.). Proprietors
speak English, French and German. Roy is a local guide. The road to Cochrane
from Canefield varies in quality and we recommend the hire
of a 4wd vehicle. Good value.

Rivers Dominica is closed
for business until further notice.
Remaining open, however, is Rosalie
Forest Eco Lodge, owned
and run by the same Jem Winston and accessed from the same location, but
to get there is a 15 minute walk up and into the heart of the rainforest,
where a choice of treehouses and typical carib style huts are available.
This could be described as somewhere in between regular cottage accommodation
and camping, with cooking on old fashioned coalpots. The same river pool
may be enjoyed for bathing.

Newfoundland Estate, east central interior
Brief Description:
Approx. 2 miles inland from the East Coast, the access trail commences
at the confluence of the Cocoa, Stuart and Rosalie Rivers, all flowing
down from the forest clad slopes of the Morne
Trois Pitons National Park. Accommodation is in two treehouses, several
Carib style huts or cabins and a small dormitary. A fold up bed may be
provided for a 3rd person sharing for a small extra charge. Campers are
also welcome. This is a true eco-resort, built entirely from local natural
materials and utilizing environmentally friendly renewable energy. All
fruit and vegetables are organically grown. There are numerous pools suitable
for bathing in the nearby rivers and several trails to local waterfalls.
Freshwater and Boeri Lakes in the Morne Trois Pitons National Park may
also be reached via a hiking trail from the nearby village of Grand Fond.
There is no restaurant, though cabins have limited self catering facilities.

and practices, of which it sought to educate not only it's visitors, but
also the local community. Two years running (2005 & 2006) it received
the American Express Caribbean Environmental Award in the small hotel category.
