Where to stay in
Dominica
the EAST COAST
|
|
Dominica's
east coast
receives
prevailing winds
off the Atlantic
Ocean. Much of the
coastline is
rugged and the
roads twist and
climb over many
ridges and cliffs
between frequent
river valleys.
Picturesque coves
nestle between
jagged headlands
and there are the
occasional
stretches of
shallow beach
where the surf
rolls in over
fine, dark,
volcanic sand and
where turtles
often come ashore
to lay their eggs at
night.
Abundant rainfall
nurtures lush
vegetation -
ferns, heliconia,
climbing cheese
plants etc., along
with our
plantations of
coconuts, bananas
and other tropical
produce. From the
Pagua River, the
road weaves south
through the Carib
Territory, where
fruit, freshly
squeezed juices
and local
handicrafts such
as basket weaving
and carvings may
be purchased from
small roadside
kiosks. Beyond
Castle Bruce, the
coast road ends at
Petit Soufriere.
To continue south,
one must head
inland from Castle
Bruce, to bear
left at the first
junction after
passing the
Emerald Pool
Visitor Centre,
rejoining the
coast at the
Rosalie River
mouth. The scenery
along this
southerly stretch
is particularly
striking, as the
many forest clad
mountains within
the Morne Trois
Pitons National
Park tower steeply
above, their peaks
often shrouded by
cloud. Hiking
trails to two of
our most beautiful
waterfalls are
accessed from this
side - the trail
to Sari Sari Falls
is about an hour
each way from
above La Plaine,
and the Victoria
Falls on the White
River (flowing
south east from
the Boiling Lake)
may be reached
from Delices.
Also, from Rosalie
Bat, the road up
and through the
village of Grand
Fond continues as
a hiking trail up
to the Freshwater
Lake, situated at
an altutude of
2,500ft..

Brief
Description:
Steve
& Sandra migrated
from Canada in 1996 to
make Dominica their new

lounge,
bathroom
and 2
open plan
upstairs
bedrooms.
1st Bedroom has 2 single
single beds, 2nd bedroom
has a double bed. Hot

venue so special is the
tranquil location,
crystal clear river in
which to bathe and the
beautifully spacious
garden, decorated with
flowering shrubs, an
array of colourful
flowers, organically
grown fruit and a lawned
area with picnic tables.
This is the closest

November 2012 update: until further notice
only the Annex (bedsit apartment) is available
Location: near the mouth of
the Layou River, Hillsborough, mid west coast
Brief
Description:
Petini
Layou is a newly completed (2011) guest cottage
situated in a
forest clearing on a large private estate near the
estuary of
Dominica's longest river. The Layou River valley is
an area of
outstanding natural beauty along which, at weekends
and public
holidays, both locals and visitors like to picnic
and swim. The
building comprises a small Annex - bedsit apartment
at the front and the remainder is a spacious open
plan self contained
cottage. The owner currently resides in the main
cottage and the Annex is available for short term rentals of minimum
stay 1 week.
Attractive finishes include tiled floors throughout. Rear door opens onto a covered
outdoor patio with table and chairs. Opening windows with
insect screens and
security bars. The bathroom has a hot water shower. There is no TV, but
there is a selection
of dvd's to watch on your laptop pc along with WiFi
internet.
Telephone
is available for
receiving calls only (cellphones may
also be
hired
with most vehicle rentals). For anyone not taking a
vehicle rental at the airport, pick up may be arranged upon request. In
the event of utility
problems there is a
stand-by generator and rainwater storage tank. The
access road is
unsurfaced and requires
a 4 wheel drive vehicle (which we can arrange for
you to collect at the
airport or ferry dock on arrival in Dominica). A
quiet and secluded
setting where the only sounds you will hear are
those of the birds,
frogs and crickets. No children under age 18. This
venue is intended
for romantic
couples, writers, artists, musicians or business
people seeking a break
from the hustle and bustle of our hectic lifestyles.
Maid service twice
a week. Though there is a
disused quarry in the vicinity it is not visible from the cottage. A good central location,
convenient for exploring the entire
island - Melville Hall Airport 50
minutes, Roseau 20 minutes. Nearby
attractions include wacky Rollers treetops adventure
park and river
tubing on the Layou River. The popular beach at Mero
Village is just a
5 minute drive north and 5 minutes beyond that is Salisbury Beach where scuba
diving
can
be arranged with the East Carib Dive Club.
The east coast can be reached via the Layou Valley
road and Portsmouth
is a 40 minutes drive north, passing on the way the
turn off to
Syndicate Forest on the western slopes of our highest
mountain, Morne
Diablotin (4,774 ft.) and Picard Beach. Approaching
Portsmouth is the
Indian River National Park and beyond
Portsmouth
is the Cabrits peninsular - a National Park with
nature trails and the
historic Fort Shirley - and surrounded by a Marine
National Park.

- MAY 2015
NEAR TO MID EAST COAST
BANANA LAMA COTTAGE
Location:
Newfoundland Estate, bordering Cacao River, 2 miles inland from
Rosalie, mid east coast.
Brief Description:
Andy (sea captain and engineer) and Melissa (architect and
chef) have sailed the world whilst captaining the boats of others. On
visiting Dominica, it was not a difficult decision
for them to make to relocate
and call Dominica their permanent home. Having purchased 3 acres of
what was previously a banana farm in one of the most idyllic parts of
the island, they set about building their home in the most ecologically
friendly way possible. First they built a 1 bedroom cottage in which
they have lived whilst building their main home. Both are powered by
solar panels and their drinking water is piped from a natural spring on
the property. Now that the main house is occupied and nearing
completion, the cottage described here is available for short term
rental.
What makes this venue
so special is the tranquil
location, crystal clear river in which to bathe and the beautifully
spacious and well tended garden, decorated with flowering shrubs, an
array of colourful flowers, organically grown fruit and veg. The
Lounge/Dining/Kitchen area is open plan and due to the privacy of the
location opens onto the rear garden below. The bedroom area, however,
may be made secure. Downstream
is the farmer from whom they purchased, immediate neighbours upstream
are an American couple who recently completed their home and beyond
that is nothing but unspoilt primordial rainforest rising up to the
Morne Trois Pitons National Park, which can be reached by various
hiking trails. WiFi internet is available along with 110V outlets for
those with North American appliances. Although the kitchen is fully
equipped and has a barbecue, it may be possible to share some meals
prepared by your hosts, for which there will be a charge.
Vehicle hire
recommended at this location - Charles Douglas (formerly Melville Hall)
Airport 1 hour, Roseau 50 minutes, Rosalie Bay 10 minutes.
We can pre-arrange for a rental vehicle to be
awaiting you at the airport or the Roseau Ferry Terminal on your
arrival in Dominica.
Natural
attractions easily reachable by road - Carib Territory, Emerald Pool,
Morne Trois Pitons hiking trail from Pont Casse, Rosalie Bay where
turtles nest, SariSari Falls hike from Laplaine, Victoria Falls hike
from Delices.
